The puck is dropped...Let the games begin!
Last nights action had some definite surprises with the 27th ranked Maple Leafs downing the defending cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Roberto Luongo made his presence known posting the first shutout of the 2008-09 season against the Flames. The Bruins got the best of the Avalanche in a 9 goal game, with each team getting goals from different players. The San Jose Sharks gave the Ducks more than they could handle behind 2 goals from Jonathan Cheechoo.
Around the league the Buffalo Attack raked in the points last night and were more than please that they acquire Jonathan Cheechoo in the draft. They also got a big surprise from Boston Goaltender Tim Thomas, who added 7 points to the mix. Thomas was projected to be number 40 on the goaltender fantasy point projections and is certainly not starting out that way. In a distant second were the SF Dragons, riding the tails of Vesa Toskala, who was in net for the Leafs as they bested the Wings and put 9 points in the bank for the Dragons. Even with the Dragons were the Richmond Falcons, who smartly selected Roberto Luongo in the second round and were rewarded with 13 points for the effort.
News on the injury wire is that Daniel Alfredsson had to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee to remove a bone chip and it is yet unknown how much time he will miss.
We will be venturing into uncharted territory for the SSFHL later this season. We plan to take some small steps towards the infamous keeper leagues. I think it would be good to add some of their flavor to our league. We will probably start with two players per team, but the exact details are yet to be determined. Stay tuned for more information as the season progresses.
I told you all about the possibility of a "legends league" who's idea was brought forward by our friends at the Local Puck Hog 242. They have invited us to chat with them on their message boards, so just tell them you are with the SSFHL and they will be more than glad to sign you up!
